Pyrmont Point Hotel is a distinguished historic corner establishment that has transformed into a vibrant gastro-pub, situated in the heart of Pyrmont, Sydney. Founded in 1850 as the Lands End Hotel, it was renamed the Royal Pacific Hotel in 1886 and ultimately became Pyrmont Point Hotel following a significant renovation in 1996. The addition of a third floor in 1913 conferred the venue with its striking Edwardian character, and the original “Royal Pacific” lettering continues to adorn the parapet. Over the decades, the hotel has undergone numerous visual and structural enhancements, each contributing to its unique charm and rich heritage.
The hotel occupies a notable position in Sydney’s cultural history; at one time, the notorious underworld figure ‘Neddy’ Smith was a regular patron.
The David family has owned and operated the hotel since 2010, following their previous stewardship of Coopers Hotel in Newtown. Their recent extensive renovation included relocating the gaming room, establishing an inviting new cocktail bar, and undertaking a comprehensive upgrade of the ground-floor bistro and kitchen. An all-weather, sun-filled first-floor deck overlooking John Street Square was added, and the first-floor bar was redesigned to offer 16 beers on tap. Refurbished function spaces now feature an open fireplace. John Street Square provides a welcoming environment for families to enjoy gourmet meals while children play, and even four-legged companions are welcome for a relaxed lunch.
The hotel is a heritage-listed building, recognised for its significant social and architectural features. The 2023 renovation, led by Peter Jay of Peter Jay Design Associates, encompassed a thoughtful restoration and transformation of this historic venue. Their work elevated the hotel to modern standards, while preserving its classic character and expanding its footprint.
Numerous heritage elements were meticulously restored during the renovations. Concrete render was removed to unveil the original Pyrmont Sandstone slabs, which form the external walls and enhance the building’s notable streetscape. The original awning was carefully reconstructed and reconditioned. Sandstone blocks salvaged during the renovation were creatively repurposed to form a striking steel arch between the bar and cocktail area, creating a three-quarter height enclosure that celebrates the building’s history and provides a welcoming space for guests.
Peter Jay is recognised for his expertise in integrating historic preservation with contemporary design, an approach clearly demonstrated in the Pyrmont Point Hotel renovation. The firm retained the hotel’s heritage features, such as its ornate façade and classic charm, while revitalising the interiors with modern materials and functional spaces that accommodate contemporary hospitality trends.
